NO PLACE LIKE HOME - SEASON TWO

Gul Hussien, his wife Mujaheda, and his family narrowly escaped Kabul, Afghanistan in late 2021.

When the Taliban retook power after 20 years of US military occupation, ordinary citizens like Gul, who is a Hazara, a member of a Shiite Muslim minority, found themselves in a desperately dangerous situation.

Gul and his family narrowly escaped, and now must rebuild their lives in Auckland.

Like many refugees Gul has complex feelings about where home is. "I think I'm still like a bird, flying. Even though I'm here I still cannot forget that I had a home, a family in Afghanistan. So, if I say this is my home then what is that that I left behind?"

There are over 100 million displaced people across the globe. Thirty-two million of them are #refugees. Each year New Zealand takes in around 1000 refugees who fled to escape persecution or war.

This season of #noplacelikehome follows the dramatic journeys of six refugee families as they resettle in New Zealand.

No Place Like Home, Season One, follows six couples as they return to New Zealand to rebuild their lives after the Covid pandemic.

In episode one we meet Olivia and Lucie. Olivia left New Zealand when she was 17. She’s now in her late 20s, married, and lives in London. At the same time as Covid is wreaking havoc across the UK, back home her mother, Tracey, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Olivia and her British wife Lucie return to New Zealand to care for Tracey in her final months. While working remotely they plan for Olivia’s younger sister’s wedding, and try to conceive their first child.

In May 2021, the German government formally acknowledged responsibility for the colonial-era genocide against Namibia's Herero and Nama peoples more than 100 years ago.

It was the first such atrocity of the 20th century. Many historians now see it as foreshadowing the Nazi Holocaust of World War II.

But Herero and Nama activists, who have long campaigned for reparations, say the compensation on offer does not truly reflect the appalling suffering of the tens of thousands who died.
